Amazing discovery in Siberia!Following the melting of permafrost due to climate change, scientists have found the remains of a mammoth chick dating back more than 50,000 years.
Climate change, often cast in a negative light due to its profound impacts on the environment, is unexpectedly unveiling hidden wonders beneath the Earth's icy surfaces. As glaciers and ice sheets recede, scientists are discovering new species that have been locked away in these frozen realms for millennia. These discoveries not only enrich our understanding of biodiversity but also highlight the intricate balance of ecosystems that are often overlooked.
Momutes are the ones who gave birth to current elephants and the last specimens disappeared about 4,000 years ago.
The specimen found in Siberia was very well preserved.Mammoth baby is called Yana and it turns out that he was one year old when it was frozen. It was found in the Batagaika crater from the Yakutia region (the coldest place on earth).
The Batagaika crater is over a kilometer deep and scientists have also found the remains of other ancient animals such as a sword-toothed cat or wolf, they are also at least 30,000 years old.
Scientists from the North East Federal University of Russia will take care of Yana and study it to better understand how mammoths lived.
Besides the large animal species discovered, researchers have identified also new species of small invertebrates, including crustaceans and worms, thriving in subglacial lakes. These organisms have developed unique adaptations that allow them to survive in dark.
The big problem is because not only old animals species was found under ice, researchers have also discovered ancient viruses that have been locked away for tens of thousands of years. These findings not only deepen our understanding of the history of viruses but also raise questions about the implications of climate change and the potential threats these ancient pathogens may pose.
